A bomb threat postponed Tuesday’s opening of the Palm Beach Jewelry & Antique Show at the Palm Beach County Convention Center for almost two houes.
A phone threat was made to the convention center reception office at 10:30 a.m., according to resident manager Dave Anderson.
“We took it seriously and evacuated the building,” he said. Less than 1,000 people had to be evacuated.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office’s bomb squad and the West Palm Beach Police searched the building, but did not find a bomb, Anderson said.
Scheduled to open at 11 a.m., the show did not start until 12:45 p.m., when the 200-plus exhibitors had returned to their booths.
“Everyone was very calm and cool,” said Kris Charamonde, one of the fair’s organizers. Charamonde said he didn’t think the threat would hurt sales or attendance on the fair’s final day.
“I don’t think there’ll be that much of an impact,” he said.
